Thanks everyone! Love you all :D
How many ukes must one have before it’s actually classified as a mental illness?
The thing that bothers me the most about this isn’t that I have no couch space. It’s that there’s only one soprano there and I’m going to need another one or two to balance out my uke collection.

Rainbow For Japan Kids
We got to spend time with these kids from Japan that lost their homes and even family members from the tsunami. We got to hangout and build their own ukuleles. They were all so cool and fun to be around that I’m sorry to see them go. TT___TT
I keep seeing these under the ukulele tag. Apparently they’re from an Etsy store called Celentano Woodworks. Have you ever played one of these? They look really neat, but how do they stack up as serious playable instruments?
Corey Fujimoto rocks the Ko’olau archtop prototype! Some fantastic playing. This very ukulele is for sale at PuaPua for only $8000.

Anonymous asked: i love your blog! i want to learn ukulele but i'm not sure which one i should get. do you have any advice?
Thanks! (: There are a lot of good ones to start out with, but since so many companies are jumping on the bandwagon now, there are also a lot of pretty awful ones in the same price range. So it can be confusing!
If you want the cheapest possible uke that doesn’t suck, look at Makala. The colorful ones with the dolphin bridges are actually pretty good, especially once you put decent strings on them. They also make some plainer-looking ones. They’re usually $40-70 depending on size.
For a little more, you can find something nicer. Anything with a solid-wood top will generally sound better. Kala, Mainland, Lanikai, Islander, Makai, and Ohana are reliable brands. I also really like Flukes/Fleas, which are made in the US and start at $200.
I recommend buying from a reputable dealer that knows ukes, instead of something drop-shipped from Amazon or off the shelf at a chain store. Hawaii Music Supply, Uke Republic, Bounty Music, Elderly Instruments, and PuaPua are all good places to buy ukes.
Hope this helps!
Happy birthday to George Harrison! He would have been 69 years old today. Here he is rocking a Kamaka 6-string uke with a full band. Check out the tuba-playing gnome too.
